Fixing Stuff in Remote Places- By Brian

Chagos is quite literally in the middle of the Southern Indian Ocean. With Asia 2000 miles to the east, Africa 2000 miles to the west, and India 900 miles to the north it’s one of the most remote places a cruising sailor can dream of. Delos and her crew of 7 would have this tropical paradise to ourselves for an entire month. No other boats, no other people, just us and our own private little atoll.

The Salaman Atoll of Chagos has 5 major islets with connecting reefs that protect its lagoon. After about a week lounging at the northern islands we decided to move a few miles south, to Boddam Island.  At one point there was a settlement on Boddam farming copra, but for the past 50 years it’s been completely abandoned and left to the jungle to reclaim. With an exploring opportunity we couldn’t pass up we prepared Delos for the short trip through the center of the atoll.

Ever since watching Captain Ron that awesome line “A Diesel loves its oil like a sailor loves his rum…” has stuck with me and I have a little ritual every time we start the Volvo TMD22 up on Delos. Check the oil, check the coolant, and have a general look around the engine room for anything out of place. It’s just second nature now. The oil level was perfect and the coolant spot on. All looked well but as I started to climb out a little puddle caught my eye under the transmission. Oh no! That’s not supposed to be there!

A dab of my finger and a touch to my tongue later I knew we had a salt water leak. Not a major one, but enough to be concerned with. Things on a boat left to their own devices often find a way of worsening themselves in a hurry. After a few minutes of inspection I found the source of the leak. It was the raw salt water pump responsible for pumping cool ocean water through the heat exchanger. The leak was coming from the front shaft seal and was fairly small. We certainly wouldn’t sink from it anytime soon.

The real problem was the droplets of water would run down the shaft and onto the bearings, slinging nasty salt water all over the engine room as it spun. Eventually the salt water would work its way into the shaft bearings, causing them to seize, at which point we’d have a very serious problem. Our trusty main engine had suddenly become nearly worthless. We could only use it when absolutely necessary until repaired.

We didn’t have a rebuild kit on board and the closest chandlery was in Phuket, Thailand thousands of miles away. We resigned ourselves to making due as a pure sailboat for the next month or so. Luckily this area of the Indian Ocean is known for reliable easterly trades and I was certain we could make it to our next stop in Madagascar without too much drama. With months and thousands of miles left in the season my priority was making sure a new pump was waiting for us in Madagascar.

We have an Iridium Go! Onboard that we use for email at sea, and I was hammering out communications to our family and other cruisers. Since we had no internet I needed help to find the right parts and figure out if shipping to Madagascar was possible. The good news first- we could get the parts shipped in about a month. The bad news- Madagascar is a funny place about receiving valuable shipments. Other cruisers relayed stories of items disappearing or held indefinitely until the correct “gift” was delivered to the official in charge. With a value of nearly $800 US I’m sure our pump and spares would have some unwanted attention from customs. Shipping was out, we’d just have to improvise when we arrived and hope for the best.
The days melted together as they do when cruising. Sunrise merges into sunset in an endless cycle and the weeks flew by. We were running our Onan generator as usual one evening to make water and top up the batteries when I noticed the charge current for our house batteries fluctuate wildly then drop to nothing. Oh great I thought, what now? Back into the hole I went to inspect the situation and found our brand new MasterVolt Charger showing an error code on the digital display. It was powered up just fine but reporting high voltage on the battery side and had shut itself off. I felt like poor Delos was shutting down one system at a time.

Now this is an even bigger problem for us than the pump. Delos is a very electric boat. We have electric furling motors, winches, navigation, heads, pressure water, and freezers. Not to mention the crew depends on our laptops for both entertainment and work which is a huge power draw. We do have 600W of solar power but it’s still not enough. Normally we need to run the generator every day for an hour, especially with 7 people onboard. Our back up is to charge with the alternator on our Volvo, which was out of the question given the pump.
So we went into ultra-power conservation mode. We consolidated the freezers and turned them off at night. We used nature’s toilet instead of the heads and stopped charging our laptops. It all added up and suddenly we were living 100% off solar energy. It felt great knowing that you really can conserve power if the entire group makes an effort. We were scheduled to set sail in just a few days and we needed a little more juice for the trip. We would be hand steering for the next 2,000 miles because the autopilot is just too power hungry, but I wanted to make sure we could leave on the radios, navigation, and sailing instruments.

Our wind generator had blown up its regulator some years back in Fiji during a squall so my plan was to repair this giving us the little extra juice we needed for the passage. While troubleshooting our battery charger I had pulled out Nigel Calders book “Boat Owners Mechanical and Electrical Manual” and noticed a section on voltage regulators. I felt pretty confident I could make my own after reviewing his schematics and set out soldering up a crude bridge rectifier. It took an afternoon of digging around the boat and soldering but at the end of the day it worked! We still had to massively conserve but we could breathe a little easier.

The sailing was beautiful and after 10 days of hand steering we made the coast of Madagascar and dropped the hook in Nosy Be. The wind was perfect and we only had to motor the last little bit into the harbor.  My next week was consumed with tracking down parts to fix our pump. I explored back alleys and every hardware and automotive related shop in the village. I needed bearings, seals, and some sort of hydraulic press to get it all back together again. Madagascar is a French speaking country, so it took lots of patience and hand gestures. Finally I resorted to carrying a plastic container full of broken parts with me everywhere, so I could just pull out a greasy bit, smile and point. Then one day I hit the jackpot. I met an Austrian expat that had been living there for 25 years. He knew just about everyone in town and sent me to the German expat with a hidden auto repair garage. Bingo! Within two days I had the pump good as new. The total cost including parts and labor- about $18.00 US. A far cry from the $800 plus shipping hassles I was prepared to shell out for a new one.

My new Austrian friend was very nice and took me on a tour of his house. He was particularly proud of his new swimming pool. Apparently he had just upgraded the whole pump and filtration system to run off of DC pumps so he could use solar during the day. Behind his desk I noticed a brand new 24V Victron battery charger. He said it was an extra unit and just sitting there. My eyes must have nearly bulged out when he offered to sell it to me for a fraction of the cost of a new unit.

Within a week of arriving in Madagascar Delos was good as new and all systems were go! It’s amazing what you can get fixed with a little bit of patience, time, and of course lots of smiles.
So what did I learn from this experience?

• Systems failures are part of cruising! It will happen, often in the most inconvenient time and place. You can’t control that but what you can control is your ability to think things through, improvise, and adapt your lifestyle to the situation.
• Spares are good! On Delos we now carry a spare rebuild kit for anything we can rebuild ourselves. This includes raw water, coolant, bilge, and toilet pumps.
• Look for parts in strange places! If a town or village has cars there’s likely to be a hidden garage or shop around with basic supplies like hoses, belts, bearings, and seals. Take your broken part with you and look forward to an adventure. And don’t forget to smile lots Image may be NSFW.

• Seek out an Ex-Pat! In most places you’ll find an Ex-Pat or two, usually bellied up to the local pub. These guys are a treasure of local information and are always super helpful. Buy them a beer and ask about local treasures like hardware, pool supply, and machine shops.

Sailing Around The Cape Of Good Hope – Day 1

0430- The alarm goes off and I find myself feeling pretty alert even though I didn’t get as much sleep as I had hoped.  Tucker and Victoria lured us over to Convivia last night with the promise of rum and conversation.  It was too good of an offer to pass up even though we knew we had an early morning ahead of us.  But we were responsible sailors and left after only two rums.  Really hope to see those guys in Cape Town!

0500- The sun is just starting to peek over the horizon and the world is coming alive.  The weather is calm outside as predicted.  We use our last internet time to check Predict Wind and verify the forecast from last night, one last chance to make sure a gnarly SW buster isn’t looming over the horizon to ruin our day.

0530- All is looking good and were going for it!  Today is the day to head south and begin our trip around the Cape of Good Hope!!  It seems like we’ve done this drill hundreds of times- getting Delos ready for passage.  We all sort of wander around storing odds and ends that might get tossed around.  Laptops stored, dishes put away, cameras in their cases.  All is ready and with barely a word we work as a tight team to slip the dock lines and maneuver Delos out of her slip.

0600- We get the last permission from Durban Port Control to exit the harbor and we make that right turn, straight out into the sunrise and the fleet of small fishing boats that managed to wake up even earlier than us.  As predicted the wind is light out of the SW, only 5-10 knots, but directly on our nose.  We decide to motor straight into it and get out into the current as soon as possible rather than tacking.  The conditions are what we expected- not great but not bad either.  We arent breaking any speed records at 5 knots but were going in the right direction.  There is about a 1.5 meter swell running that’s slowing us down but we expect this to go away as the wind changes through the day.

1200- YEAH!!  We’ve found the current Image may be NSFW.

🙂
The wind has also started to clock around as predicted and we put out full sail and point Delos due South on our course.  Not quite enough wind to sail so we decide to motor sail for a while longer.   With the added boost from the Agulhas current and sail we are now making 10 knots SOG.  YIPPPEEE!!  Hopefully the wind continues to clock around as predicted.  If so it will be behind us by the afternoon.

1800- The wind has clocked around out of the ENE now but its still very light, about 8 knots.  We decide to continue motor sailing to keep our speed above 9 knots.  With the vicious weather on this coast its not a place to bob around waiting for more wind..  We’re not in the passage groove yet and all our sleep schedules are still off so dinner is not organized like normal.  I decide to make myself a nice little ham and cheese sandwich with salt and vinegar chips.  Before I know it the entire bag is devoured.  Oh well.  Time to get some rest as my next watch is 00:00 –03:00…

Sailing Around The Cape Of Good Hope – Day 2 – Surfing

00:00 I’m pretty sure my head just hit the pillow, and yet here is Brady telling me it’s time for watch. Apparently I forgot to set my alarm. My bad bro! My head is fuzzy after only about 4 hours of sleep but it’s just enough. I know pretty soon my body will adjust to the different pattern. Until then instant coffee is my best friend and I make myself a jumbo size cup for my watch.

01:00 The wind is building just as predicted, now out of the NNE. Soon it’s blowing 15 knots, then 20, then 25. Rock on!! Right where we want it. Perfect!! I turn off the diesel and all is silent except for the sound of the wind and waves. We are averaging over 10 knots under just the genoa and mizzen which is awesome! Every once in a while a wave catches us just perfect and we start to surf down the face. It’s hard to describe the amazing feeling of surfing in a sailboat. The stern lifts gently, then settles as the wave passes underneath. Suddenly you feel the boat accelerate and settle down, then WHOOSH you’re off surfing down the wave on a 20 ton, 53 foot board. Incredible! 11 knots, 12 knots, 13 knots, 15 knots. Awesome.

02:00 The moon is out and making a spectacle of appearing from behind cloud banks. It’s one of those magical nights at sea where you’re exactly where you want to be and everything is in place. It’s moments like these that make all the hard work to get here worth it. Speaking of work we have some decisions to make regarding our course. East London is fast approaching and we could make port tomorrow afternoon. But…. There has been a little shift in the weather and the breeze is supposed to turn from Southeast to South, then back to East instead of the Westerlies we expected. This is great news because if this forecast holds then we can keep on going to the next port instead of stopping. We have friends in East London and would love to visit but on this coast if you have the opportunity to make it one more port down the line you go for it. We’ll need to make our decision tomorrow.

06:30 Uggg. Brady is waking me up again. Only 3 hours of sleep this time. And this time it’s not because I forgot to set my alarm. The wind has shifted and we need to set up our downwind poles to maintain course. And I’m the “on call” guy since Karin just finished her watch. It all feels like a dream world and I’m super sluggish. I stumble onto deck and Brady hands me a harness. He has everything ready. We’ve done this so many times it all happens without one spoken word. Poles are attached, downhaul, fore-guy, after-guy, topper. All are set and within a matter of minutes we’re cruising dead downwind just flying along the tops of waves. It’s such a cool spectacle I decide to get out our new 360 camera and try to capture some of the action. I really hope it turns out.

17:00- Yet another day at sea has flown by. My 12:00-15:00 watch was uneventful and I passed most of the day by snoozing and reading. Not too bad. Except I have already burned my shoulders. Amateur move… Apparently I lost my tan during our little visit back home. We checked weather again and have made the decision to bypass East London and keep heading West. Yippeee!! Now the next decision is do we stop in Cape St. Francis or can we make it all the way to Mossel Bay? Will know that one tomorrow.

18:30- Dinner time! We are back on schedule now and I decide to cook a quick and easy dish. A few slices of chicken breast sautéed with mushrooms, onion, and garlic. Add salt, pepper, oregano, and some dill. Now boil some pasta. Finish it off with chopped tomatoes and freshly grated parmesan and serve in a deep bowl. Yummy, warm, filling, and totally cruiser style.

More tomorrow!

Sailing Around The Cape Of Good Hope – Days 3 & 4

Day 3

00:00- The wind is starting to come out of the south now. It’s nice and light, about 10 knots so perfect conditions really. I cut the engine off and unfurl the genoa. Delos is now cruising along at about 7 knots and perfectly happy. Over the next hour the wind builds from 10 to 15 to 20 knots. Now Delos is really crashing along with full sail, speed 9 knots. I hand the helm over to Karin and head downstairs for a little rest. If the wind comes up anymore we’ll need to reef.
01:00- We start seeing a constant 25 knots and it’s a bit too much for full sail. Karin wakes me up to give her a hand. It’s our rule that you never wake the person up about to go on watch, that way they start out fresh and rested. Since Brady was up next I was on call. Reefing Delos is pretty easy, no need to head on deck in the middle of the night. It’s all a matter of using the mechanical and electrical furlers from the cockpit which is something I absolutely love about Delos. We’re able to put reefs in the genoa, main, and mizzen within just a few minutes and I’m back to dream world.

02:00- The wind continues building out of the south and Karin reports 30 knots solid, gusting to 35. Seems like our old friend the Cape still has a few surprises for us. The forecast calls for 15-20 but 30 is pretty common. We decide to just go to the third reef on everything in case it continues to build. We shorten sail WAY down and Delos stands back up, still doing 8 knots. The ride is much more comfortable but we’re still going fast and since we need to head upwind to maintain our course we are now slamming through waves. 9 waves will glide right by us, but then the 10th will catch the bow at a weird angle and SLAAAMMMM! It’s a little unnerving and not comfortable. The entire boat resonates with the impact of the waves and you can’t help but think of the stresses on the rigging and hull. But she’s built for the ocean and we’ve seen worse.

11:00- I awake dazed and confused. I had watch earlier this morning but my mind is cloudy and I really can’t remember it well, a sure sign of sleep deprivation. With the roaring wind and slamming I find myself dreaming that I’m in a car crash. And it really feels like that when the waves hit us. Then there’s the sound of winches, of sails being unfurled and trimmed. Karin must be handing the watch over to Brady and it’s his turn. At this point I can identify every single noise from my bunk. The primary winches resonate their creaking through the entire cabin when they are eased. It’s a very deep and powerful noise. The electric furler up front makes a slight whirring noise. When you hear this followed by flapping sail, then the grinding noise of the winch it means someone is shaking out a reef. The conditions must have improved! Either that or I’m still dreaming.

14:00- It’s my watch again and the conditions really have changed. The sun is out, the water is flat, and we are motor sailing yet again. It’s warm enough to read without a shirt on. It’s hard to believe we’re in the same ocean that unleashed her fury on us last night. How quickly it changes. We’ve been motoring for a few hours now to maintain a speed of 6 knots. We checked weather again and have decided to make a run for Mossel Bay, about 180 miles further west, by-passing St. Francis. If we maintain 6 knots we will arrive tomorrow, hopefully before the sun sets. This puts us in about 8 hours ahead of the nasty forecasted Westerly that’s headed this way. We definitely want to be in the anchorage for that as its forecasted for 30 knots which probably means in the 40’s.

15:00- The wind returns as forecasted out of the S, then clocks around to the SE. We cut off the engine and roll out the genoa. We’re now cruising at 7.5 knots right on course towards Mossel Bay. Awesome! Hopefully it holds for the next day to get us there.

Day 4

22:00 The wind is now fully out of the east and blowing a solid 25 and we are MOVING! On course and just cruising in perfect downwind conditions with the genoa poled out on port. The forecast has been pretty spot on and our ticket to Mossel Bay has arrived!

24:00 Our average speed for the last few hours has been 10 knots, which is pretty good for a heavy cruising boat like Delos. The waves have built and I guess them to be on average 3 meters. There is also a 4 meter ground swell out of the south. When these two meet it creates these gigantic pyramid shape waves that are crashing all around us. When one of these decides to form at our stern we get a major boost and its surf city! Now we’re talking 15 knots of boat speed and super stable as she lifts out of the water and heads down the face of the wave. What an amazing feeling to blaze down one of these in the middle of the night! Really quite surreal.

02:00 I awake in my bunk shivering, for the first time in a very long time I’m actually cold on Delos. It’s about 18c and much colder with the wind chill. Just a few inches away on the other side of the hull I can hear the smooth sound of the water rushing by. I guess we’re still cruising and on course.

06:00 Brady wakes me up for watch. I swear I set my phone but maybe I’m going crazy. Nope, it’s set but for some reason has frozen and needs a reboot. Looks like my Asian Super Phone I purchased in Borneo years ago for $100 is on its last legs. Bummer, really liked that phone. I wander out on deck to find a beautiful, sunny day with clear blue skies. The wind has come down a little bit we still have 12 knots out of the East. Conditions are perfect and I make myself a gigantic cup of coffee to clear the cobwebs and settle in for my morning watch. All is quiet and Delos is sailing herself so I grab my copy of The Count of Monte Cristo. Shout out to the crew of S/V Carib Cannibal for giving me the read. I’ve seen the movie but never read that book. So far it’s an awesome read!

08:00- The wind finally dies and leaves us bobbing around. Time to motor as we’re only about 30 miles away from Mossel Bay and we need to get there before the Westerlies pound us in the face.

09:00 Karin comes on watch and I decide to take a nap in the sun. What a life out here :). We only have about 25 miles to Mossel Bay. Not quite as exciting as sailing but our Volvo is moving us along at 6 knots in the right direction. ETA for Mossel Bay is now 14:00. I downloaded the latest weather forecast over Predict Wind and it looks like the Westerlies end tomorrow night around 23:00. Just a quick little spell. We may only spend 1 night in Mossel bay before heading out again if the forecast holds.

02:00 Dropped the hook and safely anchored in Mossel bay to wait out the weather. We are all pretty tired and will probably spend some time napping. Beyond that no plans :). We will probably hang out here until Thursday night or Friday morning then get underway again.

I peek my head out the aft hatch and find a cold, rainy, grey morning.  The wind is just starting to blow, already up to 20 knots but expecting 30’s today out of the SW.  Definitely made the right call to pull in for weather.  Otherwise we’d be beating our brains out against it off Cape Agulhas right now.  Not fun….

10:00- We’ve decided to make it a cozy work day on Delos.  To me it’s the best office in the world.  We have everything we need here.  Hot coffee, tea, snacks, and thanks to mobile data even internet.  It’s not the fastest but enough to get some work done. And we can do it all in our pajamas.  How cool is that!

12:00 The wind is really starting to blow now.  Topping 30 knots solid and both wind generators are cranking in the juice.  We’re able to run all three laptops, our wireless network, and all the other boat systems off the power.  Almost as good as being plugged into the dock!  I decide to take a look at the 360 footage we took on the passage and post it on YouTube and Facebook.  Since we’re so new at this game and really not sure how to use it I ask for some feedback from the Delos tribe.  And boy did you guys respond!  Nice!!!  Between YouTube and Facebook we got nearly 1,000 comments!  Thanks Delos Tribe Image may be NSFW.

General consensus is longer or no cuts, and a stable location giving the viewer the chance to pan around without being interrupted.  Makes perfect sense.  Most liked it, a few didn’t as to be expected.

14:00 I’m working away answering Facebook and YouTube comments when I hear some whistling and shouting outside.  I head out in the cockpit to find a ski-boat full of people shouting something at us.  I wave and smile, they look at me like I’m crazy.  What’s going on?  They shout something again, then I look and realize we are now in the middle of the bay, probably about 300 meters from where we set the hook.   Now their shouting makes sense.  “You guys are dragging!!!!”  Oh man, how embarrassing is that?!!?!?!?  It’s a reality check at that moment.  We thought we set the hook good, backed down on it good, and had out 50 meters, over 150 feet of chain and we’re only in 4.5 meters of water.  We should be just fine but apparently the bottom must be really shitty holding.   I can count the number of times we’ve drug anchor in Delos on my hands over the years.  It pays to never be complacent and we had been.  We held all morning and got comfortable.  We turned our instruments off and there was no perception of motion inside Delos.  We were in our little work zone and oblivious to what was going on around us.  I suppose it’s bound to happen if you sail long enough but it’s a real confidence shaker.  What if we drug into another boat?  Or worse a shoal or the beach?  The thought makes me shudder.  Luckily here in Mossel Bay there are no other boats and we could have drug for another mile or two without hitting anything so weren’t in any danger.  The only damage is to our delicate sailor egos….    Special thanks to the guys in the ski boat- that was super cool to come out and shout at us.  Cheers to you!

14:05 Engine is on and we’re pulling up the chain to reset the hook.  We head back in towards the breakwater and drop again in 4.5 meters of water.  I put out 60 meters (180 feet) of chain.  I engage Delos in reverse to set the hook and start to back down.  Brady is up at the bow watching the chain stretch out.  GPS speed shows 1.5, 1, .8, .7, .3, 0….  Looking good so far.  But then almost imperceptibly the speed starts to go up again.  .3, 7, .9 . At the same instant Brady shouts “Nope bro, didn’t set!”  What the hell type of bottom is this?  Must be hard packed something, or a thin layer of sand over rock, or a bed of seaweed or some other crappy type.  Crappolo.

14:15 Hook is up again and we decide to try a different spot, about 250 meters to our starboard side more in front of a sandy beach but still protected somewhat by the breakwater.  I drop the hook and this time put out 86 meters of chain, just over 280 feet.  In 14 feet of water!  With this massive scope if it doesn’t hold we’ll have to try something drastic like another type of anchor.  Sometimes throwing more chain at the problem isn’t the right solution.  But since we wouldn’t be here very long and had some wiggle room decided to go for it.  And changing the anchor is a lot of work so I hope it holds.  I back down and the speed drops again, pretty soon showing 0.0 knots over the ground.  Increasing RPM in reverse I go to 1,200, 1,300, 1,500 RPM.  This is enough to move Delos at over 5 knots under power and should simulate something like 50 knots of wind.  The speed remains at 0 Image may be NSFW.

🙂
We leave it there pulling hard on the chain for about two minutes with 30 knots on the nose and it holds.  “We’re set bro!” says Brady.  Whew!  Okay hope that’s the end of it.  I keep the instruments on and set the anchor alarm with a radius of 100M around us.  If we drag outside our little circle we’ll know ourselves this time!  Enough excitement for the day.

21:00 The rest of the day flew by.  Not much happened but it was a super productive work day for Delos.  I think we really needed that.  Karin made enough pizza to feed an army for dinner and we had a feast while watching BBC Planet Earth II series- the Jungles Episode.  If you haven’t seen these they are absolutely the most fantastic filming we have ever seen.  I especially love the last 10 minutes of each episode where they show how they got the shots.  It’s really very inspirational for us and if I were to have a man crush/hero David Attenborough comes to mind.  What a legend!  Its lights out and early to bed for us.  The weather looks good to continue the trip tomorrow AM.  Cape of Good Hope here we come!

09:00 It’s 260 NM from Mossel Bay to Cape Town.  The forecast is very light over the next two days and we decide to go for it.  Better to have it light then against us.   After some quick calculations we figure if we average 5.4 knots for the passage we can cover the distance in 48 hours, putting is in at 9 AM Sunday morning. Sounds perfect!

09:30 We’ve cleared the bay and are headed out to sea.  There is about 5 knots of wind and a small swell running. Motor sailing with genoa furled and main and mizzen out.

10:30 Wind builds to 8 knots out of the South.  Just enough to set sail so we unfurl genoa, and turn off the engine.  Oh nice peaceful quiet…..

15:00 We’ve been sailing for a few hours.  Lots of Penguins and Dolphins around.  So very cool to see penguins!  Our speed is slow though, averaging only 4 knots.  We decide to motor sail to keep our speed up, we don’t want to arrive in Cape Town too late.  And if we have a good average now perhaps we’ll have better winds for the last part of the trip past Cape Agulhas and can sail then.  Furl in the Genoa, leave out the main and mizzen and set for 6 knots of boat speed.

00:00 Watch time!  Still motoring along under clear skies.  Almost zero breeze now.  There is a pod of dolphins following us and I could hear them while I was sleeping.  Now on watch outside I can hear them jumping in the waves just off our port side.  Too cool!

09:00 I’m awoken from a deep sleep by Brady and Karin shaking me.  What the hell is going on?  Karin is holding the camera, Brady a bottle of our finest Whiskey onboard.  Both have massive grins.  “We just crossed Agulhas bro!  We are now in the Atlantic Ocean!  Here take a shot to celebrate and appease Neptune!”  Yup, sounds about right.  I take a nice pull off the bottle and feel the warmth spread from my tongue, down my throat and into my belly.  The effect is immediate.  It’s moments like these that really make me stop to consider the interesting conditions we live in.  Awoken by a strange band of sailors that then pour whiskey down your throat in bed because you are now in a different ocean…  Brilliant!  I smile, put my head back down, and am asleep in minutes.

12:00 I sleep until watch time which is noon and it’s oh so nice!  The sun is shining, the skies are blue and we’re sailing!  Sometime during Brady’s watch the wind returned just enough.  We’re averaging right around 6 knots and the conditions are perfect.  Right on course and right on schedule.

14:00 We have 100 miles to go!  It’s now 2PM, if we want to arrive at 9AM on Sunday we have 19 hours from now.  100/19= 5.2 knots.  Give or take if we maintain 5.2 knots we’re right on schedule.  Right now we’re making about 6 knots under sail.  Better to go fast now, we can always arrive a little early and wait or shorten sail after rounding Cape Point and slow down.

24:00 We have exactly 0 knots of wind. Zilch.  Nada.  Nothing!  Motor sailing with main and mizzen out, genoa furled making 6 knots.  Not much going on except I can hear seals playing around in the darkness.  It’s super cold now- 14c!  6 hours so go, ETA for Cape Town is 07:00.

01:00  We have officially rounded the Cape of Good Hope!!!   We can see the Cape Point lighthouse flashing about 7NM off our beam.  The water is like glass and the Cape of Storms has allowed us to round her in flat waters.  Much better, I think within the next 24 hours it will be blowing 40 knots here!

06:00 The amazing, beautiful city of Cape Town is now in view and we’re greeted with the most incredible view!  The sun is just peaking over Table Mountain and it’s a hell of a way for Brady to start his 30th birthday!  We all sit up in the chilly early morning and count our blessings for having such an awesome passage.

07:00 “Cape Town Port Control, Cape Town Port Control, this is the sailing yacht Delos.  We are in bound to the harbor for the V&A marina.  Requesting permission to enter the harbor.”  Time to hail port control on channel 14.  They respond immediately “ Welcome to Cape Town Delos! What was your last port of call?”  “Our last port of call was Durban.”  They respond again “Thank you Delos.  Permission to enter harbor granted.”  Sweet!  We are cleared to enter now we just have to negotiate the bridges and we’re there.

07:03 “Bascule Bridge, Bascule Bridge this is the sailing yacht Delos entering the V&A.  Can you open the bridge for us.”  Silence…  Nothing…  A few minutes go by.  I call again.  Nothing.  Silence.  Oh crap.  Then Brady says “Hey bro, try calling swing bridge.”  I try that and they answer immediately.  Funny how they would answer to one and not the other.  Not like there are a lot of bridges here….  5 minutes later the swing bridge swings open, the bascule bridge rises up and we pass underneath both doing about 5 knots.

07:15 Delos is now safely berthed in her spot, anchored in the calm and peace of the V & A marina!  Another 800 miles and change has safely passed under her keel.  Time for hot showers, bloody mary’s, and eggs benedict.  And to kick off Brady’s birthday with a bang Image may be NSFW.

Sailing into City Life! Summer in Cape Town, South Africa! Sailing SV Delos Ep. 104

We spent 4 months exploring this epic African city! Cape Town turned out to be by far my favorite summer city! At this point we’d been moving constantly for over 13 months and where more than ready to taste the city life again! And it was cheap too! The exchange rate gave us a really sweet deal. So guess what we did after months out on the water? Sat in the air-conditioned movie theater snacking on popcorn, took long hot showers, ate bacon for breakfast and climbed mountains!
We also decided to throw a little video competition, to find our new crew for next seasons adventure! Hope you enjoy, it was a tricky but awesome video to make ? Much Love, Karin and the crew!

Dodging Massive Storm at Cape of Good Hope! Sailing SV Delos Ep. 105

Sailing from Cape Town to La Reunion is an off-the-beaten-track 3,000 NM route in some of the roughest waters on the planet. Delos is ready and our new crew has arrived! Time to head to the islands for the winter so we say goodbye to Cape Town and point the bow out into the grey, misty morning. First stop- La Reunion. This was definitely going to be one of our most intense passages ever! We start out with having to sail back around the most Southern tip of Africa, a gnarly stretch of water! But I love how you get to know our three new crew members and how they feel as we get forced into a small harbor to dodge a massive storm coming our way! an intense start to our passage for sure! Hope you enjoy this sailing adventure!
Much love, Karin and the crew!

Moonshining on A Sailboat! (The Still Off!) – Sailing SV Delos

We’ve been making our own spirits on Delos for about 4 years now! I can’t even imagine how much money we’ve saved, not to mention the crazy amount of fun we have during the process!

Thanks to the awesome team at http://stillspirits.com we’re able to make our own alcohol anywhere in the world! If you’re thinking about making your own alcohol while sailing, traveling or even at home this little episode will explain a few still models that we use while sailing! Whats a sailor without rum anyway!?

Sailing the Roaring 40s in 30 foot Waves! Sailing SV Delos Ep. 107

In this episode we sail through the roaring 40s and it was crazy! Definitely the most intense part of our 3000NM passage from South Africa to La Reunion. We had wind speeds of over 50kn, 23–32ft (7–10m) waves and in the middle of everything our autopilot breaks and it’s hand steering from now on! A bit of a tester as our new crew have not hand steered before. Our whole world was getting slammed and tossed around in the waves and I think Brady described it pretty well “It feels like if your driving a car, with your eyes closed on a bumpy dirt road for days. Knowing your going to hit a tree but not knowing when you’re going to hit that tree. So all of a sudden you’re just driving and BOOM!“

Meet Elizabeth!

So guys, I’m in South Africa.

This time last year, my world had crumbled and I didn’t know what on earth I was going to do with my life. Hope had disintegrated. Joy was gone. All I could ever hope for was another day of feeling slightly less worse, feel a day with less pain.

And those of you who follow my blog will know. You’ll know because of those moments when rum overcame everything and I opened my laptop to spill my guts onto the screen, never being too specific, never being too precise, never quite saying what had happened.

But it happened, and I am here.

It’s a strange thing actually being in the dream that you never thought possible. It’s strange being with the people you never thought you would meet. Fate in the past seemed like a cruel teacher, but all of those shitty obstacles can lead us to something amazing.

And I’m here.

I moved in with my housemate Steve. It was the morning after the night before. My face stung with the rum I was sweating from the previous night out. My tongue wishing for the taste of bacon and my hand shaking for the familiar hold of a good cup of tea. I sat down, seeing Steve already settled onto the sofa, his eyes glued onto the screen ahead.

“What you watching, mate?” I muttered, sinking down into miles of pillows and wrapping myself in a blanket.

“Just this sailing channel,” he answered back, giving me a quick nod. “It’s good.”

I nodded back insincerely, not believing him and hoping he would soon put something else on we could both watch.

I was glad he didn’t.

It was a YouTube channel called SV Delos- about a group of people that quit their jobs to go travelling around the world on a boat. By the second episode I was hooked.

My eyes were transfixed on the screen as I watched these people laugh and joke, celebrate, get drunk, dance, fish and explore new places. I sat there with my fry up breakfast, cup of tea and spent the first few hours wishing that I was there. That I could be one of them.

“I wish I could do that,” I found myself murmuring.

Days passed, house parties came and went. I drank, became hungover and watched another episode and another. Following the journey of these people living this amazing adventure that I knew I could never reach.

But why not?

Time went on and on. I stabilised, gaining control of the threads of my life again. I became a grown up. I got a job. But the cycle of partying didn’t stop and the hangover mornings of watching SV Delos with my housemate Steve continued. I was searching for something. I was restless, unsatisfied and disinterested. I became depressed, wishing for an adventure I never thought I could reach, repeating the same thought in my head, “I’m going to be stuck in this town, I’m going to be stuck in this town, this town, this town-”

The morning came when I repeated myself. “I wish I could do that…”

But wait… What was stopping me? I was single, I didn’t have a mortgage, I had no ties- there was no reason why I couldn’t do exactly what these people were doing.

I tried to write a new book. I always loved to write- creating these characters in my head and spilling out their life adventures onto a page- living out my wishes and dreams through them. But it wasn’t real- none of it was real- but for a time- it was enough, until it wasn’t.

I knew I had to do something. It was another hangover morning when I was speaking to my dad and he was urging me to come over to join him in Australia. I thought- “I have to do something.”

I sold all of my possessions. I put what I couldn’t sell into storage, trusting my friend Tommy and his experience playing Tetris to store them accordingly. I quit my job, bought a flight and within three weeks, found myself on a plane with a rum and coke staring out of the window, full of hope, full of longing, full of aspirations-

I can do this- I can do this- I can-

Five months passed in Australia. I drank rum, I danced and I lay in the sun, still hungover, still restless, still watching SV Delos thinking: “I wish I could do that.”

It was after a very bad date, riding home in a taxi when I checked my phone. SV Delos has left a status update and tagged one of the crew members- Mr Brady.

I had decided.

F**k it, I thought.

I messaged Mr Brady, squinting at my phone with the extra concentration required by one inebriated by Captain Morgan. I told him what the crew meant to me. How they had inspired me to move, how they had motivated me to quit my job. I didn’t want to say “I wish, I wish” anymore. I wanted to DO something. I wanted to BE. But I didn’t know how to, and to be honest, I lacked the courage to take that first step.

To my surprise I got a response. Three months passed of talking about arm wrestles, human pyramids, and spilling a whole life’s problems, aspirations and drunken ramblings into messenger.

Then came the day when the question came of coming to meet them in Cape Town.

“Would you like to go sailing?”

I think it took me several moments to let that sink in.

It was a voyage that would take up to a month of sailing towards West Africa from Cape Town, stopping off at islands, exploring, filming and more than likely- drinking rum.

I was terrified that I wouldn’t have the courage to go. That I wouldn’t buy the ticket. That this would just be one of those things I watched slip away and would look back on with regret.

Days came and went as I tried to figure out which direction my life was supposed to twist. Was I supposed to settle in Australia, continue to attempt to be a “grown up” and try and get the stable job, the apartment, the partner and the car I could just afford?

Or did I go down the rabbit hole once again and take a chance? Would I actually reach out and grab the one thing that made me start feeling hopeful again?

I decided.

Fast forward and I’m on a plane, being picked up by Mr Brady. The walk down the docks towards Delos was probably one of the most surreal experiences I’ve had, increasing to a pitch when I finally stepped on board. I knew this place. I had seen every inch at Steve’s, cup of tea in hand, bacon sandwich in the other, wishing- wishing-wishing-

I blinked, going below deck and seeing Karin and Brian.

I.am.here.

I’ve been here for two weeks and I’ve enjoyed keeping this to myself, savouring it, enjoying it. But I wanted to share with you all that it is possible. That anything is possible really. The future is so uncertain- and that’s actually a pretty beautiful thing. Your story is still being written. You can decide how you want your adventure to go.

Sometimes the best choice is the one that scares you the most.

Mine was following a dream.

So my plea would now be to anyone else who is thinking, “I wish I could do that, I wish, I wish-”

Life is too god damn short to be in a situation where you’re not happy. Life is too marvellous, incredible, bright, colourful, exciting and damn right scary at times.

Stop saying “I wish I could do that” and do it.

Because you can.

You so fucking can.

This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing and travel and adventure. But it’s also a story about meeting amazing people and making life long friends. It’s a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. Our experience has affected us so profoundly we want to share it, hoping that others may find inspiration to follow their dreams and do what they love.
